Cover: Image of a 50-µm-thick vibrotome section illustrating immunostaining for L194 in the inner stripe of outer medullary and initial portion of inner medullary rat kidney (IMi). L194 immunoreactivity appears in the terminal portion of the descending thin limb (DTL) of the long loop of Henle and DTL of the short loop of Henle in the IMi, which represents the localization of UT-A2. In these portions, urea transporters have an important role in recycling urea and thus in generating the urea concentration gradient in the deep IM. However, long-term treatment with cyclosporine accompanied by the urine-concentrating deficit decrease UT-A2 expression. Each tubule examined under higher magnification showed decreased immunoreactivity with UT-A2. Reduced expression of this transporter caused by CsA can be attributed to urine-concentrating capacity. Magnification: ×20.
